Action Suggestions from the Built Environment Committee

  1. Kim Thompson designs a wall with clay paint.Learn about how green renovations and green building can save energy and resources in your home by taking a tour of the Ecology Action Centre's green office renovation.*
  2. Add mulch beds and rock gardens to reduce the size of you lawn, so you have less to mow and maintain. Learn more at our Go Wild Website.
  3. Volunteer at one of our monthly work parties, usually the second Saturday of each month from 10-2. *
  4. Become a volunteer tour guide - learn about our green renovation building and then share your knowledge with others!*
  5. Use a push mower for your lawn - it’s great exercise.
  6. Plant trees – as few as three carefully positioned trees that grow to eight metres can save up to 25% of a household’s heating and cooling needs.
  7. Plant diverse, native species and produce in your yard, including trees, flowers, and food! Use lots of good soil from compost.  Lay in the hammock and watch it grow, no mowing required, then chow down.
  8. Ask for better Provincial legislation of cosmetic pesticides:
-Contact Municipal Relations Minister Richard Hurlburt (902- 424-5550) and ask him to change the Municipal Government Act to allow ALL municipalities in NS the right to ban cosmetic pesticides
-Contact Environment Minister David Morse (902-424-3736) and ask him to create effective provincial legislation banning the sale AND use of cosmetic pesticides across Nova Scotia.
-Contact Health Promotion and Protection Minister Pat Dunn {1-866-231-3882 (toll free) or  HPPMin@gov.ns.ca} and ask him to push for provincial legislation that will protect the health of Nova Scotians by banning the sale AND use of cosmetic pesticides across Nova Scotia.
