Food Action

Food Actions

You can make a difference every day with the food choices you make.

1) Educate yourself about where your food comes from, who grew or raised it, and how it was caught or farmed. Ask questions at the grocery store, call the toll-free numbers on packaged food and talk to farmers.

2) Choose local, in-season, organic and fair-trade certified foods more often. For mealtime inspiration, try FAC’s cookbook “Eating By the Seasons”

3) Try to buy directly from the growers –cutting out the middleman means that more of your food dollar goes to the people who grow your food. Farmers’ markets are a good place to start. For more sources, see our “links” page.

4) Ask your favourite grocery stores, restaurants and caterers to offer more local and seasonal options.

5) Grow a garden. If you don’t have a yard, stop by one of the Urban Garden Project (link to projects page) sites, or start your own community garden! If you have land to spare, consider sharing it with neighbours and friends who aren’t so fortunate.

6) Educate yourself about the issues facing our food system: genetically modified organisms, agrofuels, biosolids and food security to name a few. Don’t forget to learn more about the positive steps that are being taken all over the world. Get inspired by urban farmers, fair trade, sustainable seafood, and the slow food movement!

The Food Action Committee meets on the third Monday of every month at 5:30pm.  All are welcome!
