Action Suggestions from the Marine Issues Committee
1. Ask for a proper process for the proposed salmon aquaculture in St. Mary's Bay:
Residents in the Digby Area are concerned that the proposed salmon farm, with 2 million fish will adversely affect the wild fisheries, marine environment and their economc. Help support coastal communities in having a say in aquaculture siting and support science based environmental assessments. Download a copy of the petition here and return to the address included in the text.
2. Tell the MSC: Surface Longlining Isn't Sustainable
The US pelagic longline fishery in the Gulf of Mexico has entered into Marine Stewardship Council certification. The EAC Marine Team has been actively engaged as a stakeholder in the MSC assessment of the Canadian surface longline fishery and oppose this assessment as well. Many of the fish we catch in our fishery spawn in the Gulf of Mexico. We'd like to ask you to help our US colleagues in sending a message to the MSC that surface longlining is not a sustainable form of fishing. Please send a note to the MSC to let them know that you don't support the certification of the US fishery. We will soon be launching a similar campaign for the Canadian fishery, which is further along in the assessment project. Stay tuned for an Action Alert from the EAC. Take 2 minutes of your time and go here to send a letter to the MSC.
3. Download the wallet-sized Canada's Seafood Guide from Seachoice and take it with you to the market and restaurants.
4. Ask retailers for sustainably caught seafood. Let them know there is a demand for seafood that has been caught in a sustainable way.
5. Watch Sharkwater
6. Learn about the effects of sea lice on wild salmon: watch Watershed Watch's animated video.
