Bass River Heritage Museum

Bass River, NS
Owner: Bass River Heritage Society
Mover: S. Rushton

Photo by Martha BrownThe Bass River Heritage Museum is housed inside a relocated church in the community of Bass River. The museum’s story is one of both a deconstruction and a building relocation. The church was first constructed in Economy then in 1943 the church was deconstructed, shipped and rebuilt in Bass River to serve as home of the Church of the Nazarene.

In the autumn of 1999 the church was sold to the Bass River Heritage Society for $1. The organization then had the church moved approximately two kilometres away to the centre of Bass River. “It was a big day in Bass River,” recalls Martha Brown, a member of the Bass River Heritage Society. The whole community turned out to see a piece of history on the move.

The Bass River Heritage Society has maintained the building as it was when it was donated. The Heritage Museum is a great example of how buildings can find new life and new uses while supporting different communities through deconstruction and building relocation.
