The Beandock
10 John Street, Shelburne, NS
Design: Jared Flemming (owner)
Built in 1875.
Most recent renovations in 2008.
The Beandock in Shelburne is a popular café and collectibles store on the waterfront. Its dining area maintains features from the building’s first use as the main office of the Joseph McGill Shipbuilding and Transportation Company Ltd. Over the years, each owner has kept up the beautiful wood paneled office.
First constructed in 1875, the building has been adapted to numerous uses over the years. Initially it was used as an office and warehouse for coal, hay, iron and other trade goods. Since then it has housed a medical office and at present the Beandock occupies the whole first floor, with an apartment upstairs.
Today you’re more likely to see tourists enjoying baked goods and drinks at the Beandock than you are to see goods on the move. But for visitors to Shelburne this link to the past is priceless.
