Coastal

Actions

Take action to protect our coasts! Here are some actions you can take for our coasts and water and the species that depend on them:

  • Are you concerned about coastal erosion? Aquaculture? Loss of public access to the coast? Send an online postcard to the Premier and share your thoughts on the future of coastal management in NS.
  • Watch our 'Voices for the Coast' video and encourage the Premier to watch it, too. We want our provincial leaders to hear the strong message this video sends - Nova Scotians are concerned and want to see our government take action to better protect and manage the coast. Write to premier@gov.ns.ca.
  • Listen to Coastal Coordinator, Jennifer Graham speaking to CBC's Information Morning about climate change and the coast.  Call the Talk Back line: 1-800-582-5526 to say that government money is needed for coastal planning and risk assessment, not one-off repairs of shoreline fortification.  Click here for more talk back points
  • Use the comment boxes below online news articles to share your thoughts.  Here's a quick and easy guide to being an EAC Media Maven.
  • Buy a re-fillable water bottle and fill it with tap water instead of buying bottled water.
  • Don't use cosmetic pesticides. Support a province wide ban on cosmetic pesticides as Ontario and Quebec have done. Follow up by creating bird habitat by planting bird-friendly native species.
  • Encourage the Government of Nova Scotia to protect 12% of the province as promised in the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act.
  • Most shorebirds are in serious decline. Support the development of a provincial coastal strategy which protects birds and their habitat. When on the beach make sure you and your pets don’t disturb the birds.
  • Keep your cat indoors.
  • Millions of birds are killed in each year as a result of colliding with the windows of buildings, big and small. Make sure your home or office is not killing birds.
  • To get some more tips on helping birds, please see 10+1 Ways to Save Birds [pdf, 131 KB].  This document was the result of our 2008 For Our Birds Conference.
  • Please support coastal conservation organizations.
