Coastal Connections Photo Contest Winners

These are the winners of our 2006 photo contest.

Subsea Encounter 1st place: Gilbert van Ryckevorsel "Sub Sea Encounter"

prize:
two nights accommodation for two (including dinner and breakfast for two each day) at White Point Beach Resort

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist: Homarus Americanus, our common lobster, is a prominent character to meet when diving Atlantic inshore waters. When you listen well and do not try to touch him, you will hear him grunt at you. As if he is saying something like: Hey we can also co-exist in a friendly way!

2nd place: Phil Graham "Picture Perfect Peggy"

prize: one night stay for two including breakfast at the Raddison Suites Hotel and a $40 gift certificate at the Alehouse Pub.

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist:
For many years Nova Scotia's renowned coastal landmark and photography have been inextricably connected. Who can resist trying to capture this stunning landscape?

Beach Babe

3rd place (tied): prizes: $50 gift certificates at Carsand Mosher

David Lewis "Beach Babe"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist: Megan, our daughter, is a "fish". From the first time she could crawl she's spent the summers in and around the beaches of the Maritimes. She finds the beach, almost any beach, a place where she can relax and de-stress. Our family has spent countless, if not hundreds, of hours looking for shells, old bottles, looking under rocks and generally absorbing the coast. We wouldn't live anywhere but near a coast.

Greg Croft "Cape LaHave Island Exploring"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist: Our thousands of kilometers of coastline beckons folks to explore with kayak or canoe - slipping silently into little nooks and crannies!

Honourable Mentions:

Bluenose Coral Cargill "Bluenose II"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist: The Bluenose II stands as one of the most famous Nova Scotia icons. Although existing as a replica, the original Bluenose famous for her speed and racing exploits was a working ship and epitomizes the industry which brought the first settlers to this great country.

Fall Barren Scott Currie "Fall Barren"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist:
Driving south from Halifax I was struck by the fall colours of the barrens. As a new student to the area this was my first October in Nova Scotia. It won't be my last though, as I have to come back to experience the colours again - wonderful!

Surfers at Dusk Caroll deFrahan "Surfers at Dusk"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist: Lawrencetown Beach, being close to Halifax, is where I used to take my 3 kids when they were little. Our dog Ramses the third (nicknamed Chatham) a long, lean Saluki, loves to run from one to the other! The beach has those strong waves that remind one of Myrtle Beach, S.C. I used to go there on summer vacation with my 3 sisters and parents. I love seeing the surfers, families, and their dogs having fun. There is so much variety that this beach can offer. Being a photographer, this gives me many choices from kite flying to surfers, etc. So I strongly feel that this is one of NS's jewels and look forward to coming here often and also in helping to keep it clean. I am not embarassed anymore when picking up litter, and avoid collecting rocks - and I appreciate its sand dunes. So I hope all locals and tourists will enjoy the beach the way I do!

Our Beach Jane Dunlop-Stevenson "Our Beach"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist: Someone once said, "All sand sculptures are hidden beneath the sand awaiting your imagination to uncover them". A trip to the beach warms all of your senses bringing about a feeling of calm and peacefulness.

Off to Work Rob Evans "Off to Work"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist:
Commuters living by the coast and using its waters to travel to work.

Erin Watching the Fog Roll In Brigitte Watkins "Erin watching the fog roll in"

Coastal Connection Comments by the Artist: My husband and I try to instill in our daughter our own sense of respect for the environment. We do this by talking to her about the creatures that live near the beach and we show her, by example, how to respect and take care of the environment around her.
