Getting started...
It's easy to beat the congestion...
- Keep your bike in good repair.
- Consider what is a comfortable distance for you - around 10 km one-way is easy. Keep in mind that cycling just 6kms a day, 3 times a week meets Fitness Canada's minimum requirements.
- Map out a daily or frequent route. Test-ride it on a quiet Sunday. Take a different route once in a while.
- Wear a helmet.
- Wear a bright / light-coloured jacket.
- Use reflectors and night lights.
- Use a bell.
- Dress in layers.
- Get a strong bike lock.
- Install a basket, or rack and panniers, for groceries and knick-knacks.
Bike safe...
These Tips for Cyclists and Motorists are included in the NS Driver's Handbook.
The more you ride, the better it gets...
Did you know HRM has a Bicycle Blueprint? The Plan outlines policies and projects to double the number of cyclists in the area! It can only get better for HRM cyclists!
We'd love to see bike racks on buses and bikes lanes galore. We'd also like to see thousands more bike racks in this city. There's lots to be done to make the HRM more safe and bicycle-friendly.
Or let someone bike you...
Fresh Air Pedi Cabs are fun and affordable: only 50 cents per minute, though negotiating with the drivers beforehand is encouraged. Taking a pedicab with a friend can be cheaper than hiring a cab!
