The Ecology Action Centre encourages a society in Nova Scotia that respects and protects nature and provides environmentally and economically sustainable jobs for its citizens.
Your gift to the EAC will be put to work on our action-based projects, creating real change, and influencing decision makers to develop policies that favour sustainability.
As a member-driven and action-oriented environmental organization, the Ecology Action Centre works on a variety of concerns, including: Marine, Coastal, Wilderness, Energy, Transportation, Food and Built Environment issues. Based in Halifax, the EAC does work throughout Nova Scotia.
Successes have included:
- Launched the first recycling program in Nova Scotia, in the 70s. Nova Scotia now has a waste diversion rate higher than any industrialized nation.
- Organized the first International Deep Sea Coral Symposium, now a biannual event.
- Successfully advocated for the protection of 25,000 acres of wilderness in the past 2 years alone.
- Protected and restored ecologically significant Bay of Fundy’s salt marshes.
- Built support for the development of a transit pass for students at three of Nova Scotia’s universities. Just the Saint Mary’s program resulted in 50,000 additional student rides per month.
- Got 30,000 students walking and wheeling to school across Nova Scotia during International Walk to School Week.
- In August TRAX launched the Green Mobility Strategy, the culmination of extensive public consultations and analysis of sustainable transportation. The document offers comprehensive policy recommendations to provincial government.
