Longtime EAC volunteer and board member, Hudson Shotwell, travelled to Ottawa this week to accept a national award on behalf of the Ecology Action Centre.
The EAC joined four other prominent Canadian voices and a low-emission silent car as winners of the 9th annual Arthur Kroeger College Awards for Public Affairs, Carleton University.
“Since 1971, the EAC has relied on our members and volunteers to help us take on the environmental challenges facing the province. We committed to a very grassroots approach, and so it’s gratifying to receive national recognition of our work,” states EAC Internal Director Maggy Burns.
Last month, the EAC held a draw to select a volunteer, amongst those qualifying, to send to Ottawa to accept the award, along with one of the Centre’s directors.
“Our members and volunteers help make us effective at what we do. It is only fitting that one of them be there to accept the award,” says Burns.
Named after the late chancellor of Carleton University and a public servant of singular distinction, the Arthur Kroeger Awards celebrate and encourage exemplary commitment to the public good. The awards were presented at a gala dinner on May 7 at the Fairmont Château Laurier Hotel.
Award winners are selected by independent juries whose work is co-ordinated by William Fox, former director of communications for Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and a principal of The Gandalf Group. Juries are chaired by Senator Pamela Wallin (Ethics), Keith Sjogren of Investor Economics (Management), Tim Brodhead of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation (Citizenship and Community Affairs), Woodrow Wilson Center Fellow Jodi White (Public Discourse), and Senator Hugh Segal (Policy Leadership).
