From Golden to Green Handshake: A Story
Over the past two years the federal government has made significant cuts to the federal civil service, in particular to science positions. Across the country, nearly 21,000 federal civil servants have been relieved of their positions or been notified that their position will be eliminated. These cuts have had a serious impact on the scientific capacity of the Canadian government.
From the Department of National Defence to Fisheries and Oceans Canada civil servants have been let go, many with ‘golden handshakes; so called because in that year, some individuals’ annual income almost triples with the combination of severance packages and pension payouts. In many cases, this one time surge in income pushes individuals into the top income bracket with attendant high tax rates.
One civil servant, the recipient of the golden handshake, saw opportunity in an otherwise dismal situation. Knowing that he would be highly taxed and that up to 50% of that year’s income would go back to the government he decided to instead give to charity, in this case the Ecology Action Centre.
“I’ve been given an opportunity. I want to choose where my tax dollars are invested and I’m doing that by supporting an organization right here in my community, “he told us.
We would love to see other retiring civil servants who have received a golden handshake follow in this donor’s footsteps. We would be delighted if EAC were the recipient. A major gift, like the one we just received, can be put toward crucial campaigns that are sometimes hard to fund from regular sources. And because we know many of our partner organizations are in need of funding, donors can share their contributions amongst one or more registered charities.
If you, or anyone that you know, is in the same situation as our generous donor, please do get in touch with us and/or talk with a financial planner. This opportunity expires December 2013—at least for those who were laid off in this calendar year.
