Kings County Emerald Web

Coming soon… an online pdf version of the Kings County Emerald Web brochure!

Kings CountyThe Kings County Emerald Web is the pilot project of the Emerald Web, in which we have mapped many ecological initiatives happening throughout the county.

To map the initiatives, we teamed up with Saint Mary’s University (SMU). Through their Citizen Science program at the International Activities Office, we used Green Maps™ (www.greenmaps.org) to develop the brochure. We used their internationally recognized icons to indicate the locations of many eco-initiatives occurring throughout the county.

The data for the map was collected through online research, input from EAC staff and two community mapping workshops. The workshops brought approximately 12 people together, including Kings County community members, representatives from a local municipality, local organizations, and institutions.

TreeWhile showing how these initiatives create jobs and support communities are goals of the province wide Emerald Web project, the purpose of this Kings County Emerald Web map was to build the visual of what we would like to do for the entire province as well as to learn about some of the challenges we might encounter during the province wide project.

This map will help residents of the county identify and support projects and businesses with an environmental focus. We also hope that the map and the long-term Emerald Web project will contribute to a sense of community between all of the individuals involved in these initiatives.

We have identified and included the following types of initiatives on the map:

  • Community Gardens
  • Composting Sites
  • Eco-Agriculture Sites
  • Eco-Enterprises
  • Eco-Information Sites
  • Environmental Education Centers
  • Fair Trade Shops
  • Farmers Markets
  • Green Enterprises
  • Local Food Sources
  • Local or Organic Food Restaurants
  • Public/Mass Transportation Providers
  • Museums (featuring eco-related art)
  • Organic Food Sites
  • Recycling Centers
  • Sustainable Fisheries
