March Coastal Madness

Three public talks at St. Mary's the first week of March.

MARCH 3:  The Worth of Water: Perspectives on challenges surrounding the world's most valuable resource.

tap waterSaint Mary's University will be hosting Dr. Gordon Young for a talk and panel discussion entitled: The Worth of Water: Perspectives on challenges surrounding the world's most valuable resource. Dr. Gordon Young is the current President of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences and expert in the hydrology of glaciers and high mountain regions.  Dr. Young is also the founder of the Cold Regions Research Centre at Wilfrid Laurier University and has conducted high mountain hydrology research in Canada, the Alps and the Himalaya and Karakoram Mountains of Central Asia.

This event is part of the St. Mary's University Sustainability Week. It will take place on March 3rd 2009 from 7:00 to 8:45 at the Scotia Bank Conference Theatre, Sobey Building, St. Mary's University.  Dr. Young's talk will be followed by a panel discussion on environment ethics, First Nations and Provincial water policy.

MARCH 4: Fifth Annual Sable Island Meeting

March 4, 7-9:30pm, Room 201, Sobey Building, Saint Mary’s University Campus.

The program includes illustrated talks by:

  • Paul Catling, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Environmental Health, Biodiversity, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa
  • W. Don Bowen, Population Ecology Division, Bedford Institute of Oceanography
  • Cal Ross, Oil & Gas Environmental Consultant, Halifax
  • Zoe Lucas, Biologist and Sable Island resident

A Question and Answer Session, and Reception, will follow.

The meeting is organized by the Sable Island Green Horse Society and the Ecology Action Centre, and is co-hosted by Saint Mary's University, the World Wildlife Fund, the Nova Scotian Institute of Science, and Leonard Preya MLA, Halifax Citadel-Sable Island.

MARCH 5: "Our Living Beaches" with Silver Donald Cameron

Join renowned speaker and author Silver Donald Cameron to hear highlights from his award-winning book The Living Beach, along with current thoughts and observations about one of Nova Scotia's most sensitive and threatened coastal systems. Ecology Action Centre will also be launching their latest report, On The Front Lines: Strategies For Healthy Beaches in Nova Scotia.
