Marine Issues Committee Position Statement on Salmon Farming in Nova Scotia
At this time, there are many environmental concerns with how salmon farming is practiced. For that reason, we don't recommend eating farmed salmon. Farmed salmon has been rated as a product to avoid by SeaChoice Canada, based on an assessment which can be found at http://www.seachoice.org/profile/118/view. The Conservation Council of New Brunswick also has a substantial amount of information about salmon farming at http://conservationcouncil.ca/marine/index_marine.html.
In Nova Scotia, we would like to see aquaculture expansion be guided by a plan for coastal development, in a way that does not degrade habitats or appropriate coastal land from traditional fisheries. We plan to have more information on sustainable aquaculture development for Nova Scotia available soon.
The Ecology Action Centre has acted as a voice for Nova Scotia's environment for over 37 years. The EAC has been voted #1 Activist Organization by readers of The Coast magazine for six years running. Since 1971, the EAC has been working to build a healthier, more sustainable Nova Scotia.
