Paint the Town Blue
September 2009 was Paint the Town Blue month!! There were weekly events and activities around conserving water, how to be a better water steward and protecting the Halifax Harbour from pollution. They included:
Fix a Leak Week: Evening workshop to learn how people can reduce their water footprint at home by fixing leaks, installing water-saving devices and lowering water bills all at the same time. The Ecology Action Centre’s home renovation professional and a water expert from the Halifax Water Commission will share tricks of the trade and innovative ideas for saving water at home.
Walk the Watershed: Come join us on a guided hike through the Pockwock and/or Lake Major watersheds, the drinking water supply watersheds for peninsular Halifax. Learn about the role of source water protection watersheds, the services they provide and the importance of maintaining adequate buffer zones for protecting water quality.
Down the Drain, Then Where?: An education blitz about the dangers of pouring toxic chemicals and unused medicines, as well as flushing plastics, down the drain. This will include an experiential learning opportunity for youth to visit McNab’s Island where they will have an opportunity to explore the beaches of McNab’s Island and see first hand the trash and debris that washes up there.
Point Pleasant Park-TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Kick-off Event: We're teaming up with TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and students at Dalhousie University to launch this event. It will feature a community picnic and beach cleanup at Black Rock Beach in Point Pleasant Park, with the World Wildlife Fund, The Vancouver Aquarium and Ocean Wise. This is a great opportunity to participate in a National beach cleanup and enjoy a picnic in the park.
Water Soft Paths, Freshwater and Ecological Security for Canadians: Lecture with Dr. David Brooks, Senior Policy Advisor on Freshwater for Friends of the Earth Canada. This evening event will wrap up Paint the Town Blue month. The talk will be followed by a small reception, book launch and an opportunity to speak with Dr. Brooks and other freshwater experts in person.
