The Secret of the Mystery Bequest

The money arrives

As usual, the mail arrived late in the afternoon to the crowded rabbit's warren of offices overlooking the corner of Blowers and Argyle, in June, 2001. Mary, the Office Manager, already had a desk full of paper when Mark Butler, who had just checked the overstuffed mailbox on his way back from a meeting, casually plopped the day's envelopes on top. She pushed them to one side till she finished what she was working on, muttering at Mark under her breath, and then, seeking respite from numbers, started slicing the envelopes open and sorting the mail. Membership renewals, invoices, flyers, correspondence, all the regular items were stacked neatly as Mary mentally strode ahead to next week's grant application deadlines and the issue of finding space for a new intern.

The second-last envelope was open and the letter in her hands as her mind processed this newest problem, so she stared at the page for a full three minutes before realizing what she was looking at. Suddenly she focused on the amount: $58,000. First disbursement--first? There was more? ''Estate of Elizabeth Dobbins"--so it was really happening. The previous December a mysterious letter had hinted that a tidy sum was due them, but it was difficult to believe it was so much! Still clutching the paper and staring in wonder, Mary yelled to Mark.

Who was Elizabeth Dobbins?
