Telecommute

Telecommuting can be an environmentally friendly option. But make sure you are actually reducing the number of vehicle trips you take first! It's not as sci-fi as it sounds...
To telecommute is to work from home - while taking advantage of electronic communications to keep in touch with clients and colleagues "back at the office".

A word of warning...

Telecommuting only works from an environmental (and practical) point of view if it actually reduces vehicle trips - and it does have the potential to do this. However, telecommuting could also end up increasing vehicle trips in our community:

  • Telecommuters may have to make more trips because all their office resources are not in the one workplace.
  • Telecommuters may find it harder to get support services, like child care, nearer to home than the workplace.
  • Telecommuters may also be encouraged to live in an "electronic cottage" far away from the urban centre - thus promoting urban sprawl.

These are just some of the things you need to consider before committing to telecommuting.
