Water Resources Management
Land-use planning and the province’s future water resource strategy are important government responsibilities that should improve the health of our water systems.
Maintaining the quality of our water resources is necessary for human health, sustainable prosperity, and the wellbeing of our ecosystems. The quality of Nova Scotia’s rivers and lakes are declining; river salmon and trout populations are dying, lakes are experiencing oxygen depletion leading to animal deaths, and popular swimming areas are being closed.
Decreased water quality can result from human activities such as poor sewage and septic treatment, clear cutting, farming, pesticides, herbicides, dams, road and bridge construction, draining and dumping of toxic chemicals/hazardous household items, and over consumption. We must now think about better water management practices, increase stewardship and take action!
