Woodland Gardens

Whether pre-existing or created, trees and under story plants have great ornamental features.

A woodland garden is suited to areas with dappled shade and a soil rich in organic matter. Leaf color and texture are the focus of this garden design.

Combine interesting leaf shapes such as ferns, hostas, solomon's seal, or toad lilies. These choices also have spotted and multi-colored (variegated) leaves, coarse or fine textures, and varying heights and sizes. (Sum and Substance hosta can have leaves that are almost 2 feet across!)

Native Nova Scotia species such as white birch, striped maple, bayberry, or witch hazel for your shrub and tree selection would be an easy growing choice. Add or retain interesting natural features such as moss covered logs or unique lichen-covered rocks.
