Land
While on the ground lawns seem like a fairly minor part of our landscape,
a bird's
eye view quickly shows just how much of our land has been consumed by
the lawn.
- It is estimated that there are roughly 25 to 40 million acres of turf
in the US alone.1
- An estimated 3 million acres of land in Canada is currently lawn. In North
America, there are more than 58 million lawns, plus over 16,000 golf-course
facilities and roughly 700,000 athletic fields. Together, they cover an
area more than twice the size of the entire province of Nova Scotia.2
- More than 382,850 acres of land are converted to lawn each year in North
America.3
Most lawns don't even see that much use, especially front yards. But there's
something you can do. By converting a piece of your property to your own miniature
nature reserve, you can help reduce the impact of all this lawn, and restore
some natural habitat in the process.
