As a forward-driven and volunteer-based organization, the Ecology Action Centre actively values the contributions of a diverse community. We have therefore prioritized the creation of a universal access deck through the backyard that will render the first floor accessible. The first floor also comes complete with wide desks in the volunteer area, low light switches and an accessible bathroom that fulfill HRM's Barrier Free Guidelines.
Our space is also welcoming to people with environmental sensitivities because we use natural cleaning ingredients and have chosen furniture and paints that have little to no off-gassing. We have emphasized the creation of a healthy workspace that is inclusive for our diverse and ever-growing community.
Windows placed throughout the building harvest sunlight that warms the building and makes it a psychologically healthier workspace for people with seasonal affective disorder.
High-contrast flooring and wall finishes were installed to help people with visual impairments to travel safely through the building.
