8. caulking & weatherstripping Why heat the snow? Caulking and weatherstripping windows in the winter is a simple, cost effective manner to keep your home warm and draft-free during the winter. Both methods work by creating airtight seals at the windows and doors through which cold air might seep. These seals protect your warm home from the blizzard outside, and keep you from paying to melt the snow outside your window. An easy way to figure out whether you could benefit from caulking and weatherstripping is by closing all of your windows and doors on a windy day and then walking around your house with a lit stick on incense. If the smoke from the incense moves sideways when you place the incense next to a window or door, this location could likely benefit from a better seal. To check if your door needs a better seal, place a piece of paper in the doorway and close the door. If you can take out the piece of paper without tearing it, then you need to apply a better seal to your doorway.
