9. insulation 

Insulating your home is an intensive way to protect your building from heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.  Although it has a high cost for installation up front, it can yield great savings in the long term.

Most of the heat in a building is lost through the roof and through the basement.  Effective insulation efforts therefore target these regions.

A variety of insulation materials exist that vary with respect to price, availability, environmental effects and extent of offgassing.  Although the energy savings accrued from insulating your home are always excellent for the environment, it is often difficult to weigh the benefits and costs of various insulation materials in a green renovation as these vary depending on the project and location.
